TENSES

Students, we all know that there are three (3) major types of tenses .
Which are those ?
Yes, these are ;

1) Present Tense : Anything happening or being related to anything in the present time (current time) is included under Present Tense .

2) Past Tense : Anything happened in the time passed by or related to anything in the past is included in the past tense .

3) Future Tense : Anything that will happen in the future time or related to anything in the future is included in the future tense .

We can broadly classify our sentences into these three major type of tenses .

We take some very basic example .

1) Present Tense
Eg. a) He is living in India .
       b) I am a writer .

2) Past Tense
Eg. a) He was living in India .
       b) I was a writer .

3) Future Tense
Eg. a) He will live in India .
       b) I will be a writer .

Likewise, we can understand three major types of tenses .

Till now, we saw three major types of tenses which is a base ground for our study of "TENSES" .

Moving forward,

All three major types of TENSES have been categorised into many different sub-types serving the difference moods of sentences .

So, there are altogether 3 major types of TENSES and there are 5 different sub-types of each major types of TENSES .

Now, let's calculate the total sub-types of all TENSES .

Major types of TENSES = 3
Sub-type of each major TENSE = 5
So, total number of all sub-types of TENSES = 3 X 5 = 15 .

Now, we understood that there are total 15 sub-types of all 3 major types of TENSES .

So, you got the answer of the very first question which we discussed in the beginning of our lesson .

Question : What are the types and sub-types of TENSES ?
Answer : There are 3 major types of TENSES and 5 sub-types of each major TENSE . Therefore, we have altogether 15 sub-types of TENSES .

I hope students that I have made it very clear for all of you to understand the very beginning of study of TENSES .

Now, let's move on .

As we understood that there are altogether 15 sub-types of TENSES and sometime students find it very difficult to remember the names of all the sub-types of TENSES .

So, to remember we have summerized the names of 15 sub-types of TENSES .

First we look at the common names of sub-types of TENSES .

1) Simple Tense
2) Indefinite Tense
3) Continuous Tense
4) Perfect Tense
5) Perfect Continuous Tense

The above names which you all are seeing are actually the common names of 15 sub-types of TENSES .

Now, we will convert these above 5 common names into 15 different sub-types of TENSES .

Let's see, how we are doing it .

We just have to add three names of TENSES in the above common names so as to get 15 sub-types of TENSES .

So, let's make 5 sub-types of Present Tense .

Sub-Types of Present Tense :

1) Simple Present Tense
2) Present Indefinite Tense
3) Present Continuous Tense
4) Present Perfect Tense
5) Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Sub-Types of Past Tense :

1) Simple Past Tense

5) Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Sub-Types of Future Tense :

2) Future Indefinite Tense
3) Future Continuous Tense
4) Future Perfect Tense
5) Future Perfect Continuous Tense

As you can see in all above names that only the difference is the name of 3 major types of TENSES . You change the name of any major TENSE and the sub-type name changes as per the major TENSE .

Here, we got the answer of our second question which we discussed in the beginning of this lesson .

Question : Which are the different types & sub-types of TENSES ?
Answer : The names of 3 major types of TENSES are Present Tense, Past Tense and Future Tense and there are 15 sub-types of TENSES .
You give the names of above sub-types of TENSES .

I hope that till now we are very clear about names .
Till now, we have studied about the 3 major types of TENSES and their sub-types .
We calculated and learned that there are altogether 15 sub-types of TENSES .

We have also studies how to remember it names of all 15 sub-types of 3 major types of TENSES .

I guess that now remembering the names of the sub-types will not be difficult to you at all .

Students, as we have first learned the common names and by just changing the names of major types of TENSES, we can jump from on sub-type of one major TENSE to other .

So, let's recite and practise one more time here .

5 Sub-Types of Present Tense :

1) Simple Present Tense
